Top 5 Most Memorable Super Bowl Moments

The Super Bowl is one of the most awaiting and biggest sporting events in the world. This is American football's showpiece event that takes place every year to crown the sport's world champions. It's a star-studded affair, with celebrities in attendance, a spectacular halftime musical performance, and two top teams going head-to-head to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Since 1966 the Super Bowl has been played - but as with any major event, things haven't always gone as expected. Here take a look at some memorable and unusual moments in the history of America’s Game.

Blackout Bowl

The last thing you need is a power cut when the eyes of the world are on your major event. But that’s what happened in 2013 at Super Bowl XLVII.

The Baltimore Ravens were leading the San Francisco 49ers 28-6 in the opening minutes of the third quarter when the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana was plunged into darkness. Power had failed in the stadium, engineers frantically tried to restore electricity but still forced a 34-minute delay. Once the lights came back on, before the Ravens scored two more field goals to ultimately get the victory and put the lights out on San Francisco’s Super Bowl dream, the 49ers were inspired and recharged by the break and scored 17 unanswered points to come within one touchdown of winning the title.

Miami Stays Perfect

The Miami Dolphins made history in Super Bowl VII. The Dolphins captured their first Super Bowl crown, but more surprising is that they became the first team to finish the entire season undefeated. Not even the 2008 Spygate Patriots could manage this feat. To wrap up their season with a 17-0 mark, Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins 14-7 en route. They only played two teams in the regular season with a winning record so many people throw rocks at the '72 Dolphins, but what the naysayers forget is that this is the team that won all of its playoff games, including the Super Bowl, and all of those teams had winning records. Enough said.

The accidental touchdown

Scoring the winning goal, runs, or, touchdown must be every sporting star’s childhood dream in this case. It’s safe to say, however, that from Super Bowl XLVI Ahmad Bradshaw’s decisive moment won’t have been as he imagined it.

In 2012 the running back for the New York Giants scored the match-winning touchdown - but not entirely on purpose. Against red-hot favorites, the Giants were on the comeback trail, at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, with minutes remaining the New England Patriots just two points behind. The Giants, in possession of the ball close to the Patriots’ end goal, knew a field goal could be enough for a win – but to prevent their opponents from launching a comeback of their own, they crucially wanted to use up as much time as possible.

Quarterback Eli Manning handed the ball to Bradshaw, with instructions to get close to, but not cross into, the end goal – but the Patriots defense had no intention of stopping him. The next incident was one of the strangest plays in Super Bowl history, as Bradshaw sprinted, expecting a tackle – only to see the defense stand to one side. Bradshaw realized what was happening, but it was too late. As he tried to put the brakes on, despite his best efforts to stop he toppled over into the end zone. Thankfully for him, and for his teammates, the Patriots' attempts to score in the final 59 seconds were unsuccessful as a result the New York team won their fourth-ever Super Bowl.

Washington Leads to a Historic Victory by Doug Williams

To start and win a Superbowl in Super Bowl XXII Doug Williams became the first black quarterback. By the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he had been drafted. Doug Williams is the player who had many up and down years, but overall he was the cornerstone of the franchise. Due to a contract dispute, he departed the Buccaneers and bolted for the USFL. Williams landed with the Redskins after the USFL folded. Joe Gibbs made a shocking decision over Jay Schroeder he named Doug Williams the starter for the playoffs, but it proved to be the right one. The Redskins routed the Broncos 42-10. This feat is impressive because, in the 1st quarter, Washington was down 10 points. Then Washington scored 35 points in the 2nd quarter, led by Williams, Yep 35 points in a single quarter, no Super Bowl team has ever matched that. Doug Williams was named the MVP of the game and it put the icing on the cake.
